My X-husband and his wife (of over 25 years) came to stay with us over the weekend to celebrate our granddaughter's 8th birthday and she brought samples of the Brazilian embroidery that she's been working on. I want to share it with you since I thought it was a very interesting and beautiful technique.

Although I don't do needle crafting I was fascinated with the colors and textures of the yarn , and especially the dimensional designs of this type of embroidery.
What is Brazilian Embroidery?
Brazilian embroidery, like all other embroidery, uses stitches that have been known and used for hundreds of years. The difference is that stitches are chosen for their dimensional qualities, and that most work is done with Z-twisted rayon threads. Rayon thread has long been the preferred thread for this style of embroidery because of its sheen and smoothness. Most dimensional stitches, especially the bullion stitch, are easier to make with it because of the thread's smooth texture.
The use of rayon threads for dimensional embroidery, dyed in bright variegated colors, was developed in Brazil by Mrs. Elisa Hirsch Maia in the 1960's. More Recently, the manufacture of these threads moved to the US and New Zealand, but we continue to honor the origins of this art form with the name Brazilian embroidery.

Our granddaughter's first stitching effort. Pretty good!

This book has great illustrations and instructions that even I might be able to follow.
Below are samples that I found at JDR Brazilian Embroidery Elegence

Hello Carol,
How lovely the embroidery is and it's so nice to hear of a young lady enjoying the needleworks. It really has become popular again.
I do so applaud you and the other women that for the sake of the children allow X's to visit and stay in your abode with you and your current spouse...Of course, your X must not be a bipolar menace to society. LOL I know...I'm bad!! but it's true. :0)
Carol, The pictures are very pretty. Your granddaughter is off to a great start!
