JOE PIE WEED

If you have lots of room in your garden and want something showy and BIG then Mr. Joe (as I call him) is the plant for you. Butterflies and bees gravitate toward this wonderful plant because of the plentiful food it provides.

Joe Pie in early spring. It dies down to the ground each year only to rise like a giant within a few months.

Mr. Joe from across the pond. Once established you'll be able to give many starts to all your friends and relatives...kind of like zucchini...LOL
DOVES STILL SITTING
This is a bit unusual for the doves to be trying to hatch out babies this late in the year but they must know what's best.RED CABBAGE
I absolutely LOVE red cabbage and remember the special Sunday dinners that my German Grandmother would fix that consisted of Sauerbraten (marinated beef roast) Spartzle (noodle/dumplings) and sweet/sour red cabbage...........I grow a few heads of red cabbage each year and can my German Red Cabbage recipe.
I set these out for dinner but snacked on the one.........even cold it tastes great!
I don't have an exact recipe for this since I just "cook and taste" till it tastes right but I found a recipe that seems to fit the basic ingredients that I use.
GERMAN RED CABBAGE
1 medium head red cabbage, cored and thin sliced
1 large tart apple, peeled and sliced (optional)
1 medium sweet onion, chopped
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup cider vinegar (white or apple cider vinegar)
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 bay leaf
2 tablespoons oil for frying onions
Place cabbage in a pot with water. Water should be about 3 inches below cabbage. Add vinegar, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Fry onions until opaque then add to cabbage mixture. Bring to boil then simmer until cabbage is soft (about 1 hour, or more, depending on the texture you prefer).
Note. After the cabbage has been cooking for about 10 minutes you may want to adjust the taste by adding a bit more sugar, vinegar, cinnamon salt or water.

COMMON SENSE.....
SOMETHING ALL OUR CHILDREN
(and some adults)
(and some adults)
NEED TO UNDERSTAND
I recently received this via e-mail and supposedly it was credited to a speech made by Bill Gates......well...I don't think so and I can't find any confirmation but regardless......... whoever wrote this has much COMMON SENSE.....SOMETHING WE DESPERATELY NEED TODAY!
Rule 1 : Life is not fair - get used to it!
Rule 2 : The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.
Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss
Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: They called it opportunity.
Rule 6 : If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were: So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room..
Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. *This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life. Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. *Do that on your own time.
Rule 10 : Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11 : Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one..

My doves are raising nestlings right now, don't you love your doves?I very much like your dove pen.
Your words of wisdom at the end of your post are great! I might copy them for later.
Your garden & ponds are so beautiful, do you miss them when you travel south for the winter?
As always, very enjoyable post!!
I love the rules of common sense!! Amen and AMEN!! Even after working hard to instill these principles in our children, some of our older ones just don't seem to have that common sense that I had hoped would take root from our teachings!! Sadly they are like their momma and must LIVE the lessons!! :-( School of hard knocks is a very effective teacher. I'm waiting for the day that they realize that their mistakes and shortcomings aren't all our fault though. Sigh. Sometimes no matter how hard you try...
I love your Joe Pye!! Gorgeous!! I hope to grow some soon. The seedlings that I started a few years back died before I got them in the ground. I've wanted to try again but I keep forgetting to stratify them (per planting directions) until it's too late. Boo Hoo!! And in our new home, I'm not sure where I will plant them--but surely there is someplace!! I'll have to figure it out!! :-)
Your gardens are very inspiring!!
Blessings!! Kris
Wow! Mr. Joe is just gorgeous! How sweet to get to see your doves nesting like that! My mom had a few doves years ago when I lived away from home. I don't think hers ever had babies. I'll have to ask!
Love the common sense thing! Just yesterday my 14 year old daughter was telling me that she heard a mother at our church talking about her it was hurting her daughter's self esteem that she didn't have a feather, that's all the rage of the kids right now, in her hair! She had to get her one. I told my daughter that that was the stupidest thing I've ever heard! What is that mother going to do when all the other girls have boyfriends and her daughter doesn't! I told my daughter, is she going to pay some boy to date her daughter! I went on a little more in that department too! Her daughter is a very unpleasant kid to be around!
I really enjoyed the words of wisdom. So true! And of course big Joe.
I love the pictures of your doves. Your cabbage looks good too. My favorite way to eat cabbage is in cole slaw. YUM!
you are invited to follow my blog
I didn't realize that "Mr. Joe" got that huge! Wonder if there are smaller varieties?
I love that "weed." Very nice! And the rules are great! Love the one about the parents being boring! You have a lot of doves! Thanks for visiting today. Enjoy your Wednesday!
Forgot to mention that my father was from Germany and we grew up on those dishes!!! Love them!
Hi Carol...thanks for stopping by my blog tonight!
I really enjoyed the words of common sense at the end of your post! As we have a relatively new teenager in the house, I especially like the one about parents being boring! :)
Those words would be my other set of 10 commandments in my house if I was in the kid raising era...which thank goodness I am not!..
