The boiled turkey carcass broth is in the freezer...the ham-bone-bean soup is in the fridge and nothing much of our Thanksgiving meal is wasted........just a recipe renamed!  LOL

THE TRANSITIONWe've made the transition and have gotten used to the change from green to brown and wet to dry....well...sort of.........I already miss family and friends but they all take turns visiting during the winter.  But it's just too difficult to book a flight for the horses and the other Ranch Critters, LOL!

IT'S GOODBYE TIME It's that time again when we make the transition from mini-ranchers to living in a 'neighborhood' in Arizona.

When it looks as beautiful as this (and the grapes are ripe!)  I know I only have a short time to pack up for our "winter stay" in Arizona.

If you have lots of room in your garden and want something showy and BIG then Mr. Joe (as I call him) is the plant for you.  Butterflies and bees gravitate toward this wonderful plant because of the plentiful food it provides.

Craig's list advertized two FREE roosters last week.  I'm always very cautious of those ads but this turned out terrific!  I ended up with two beautiful (still juvenile)  Rhode Island Red boys!

Below is a basic overview and I assume most domestic violence shelters follow the same basic guidelines.

THE HOUSE
Ours was an average looking single story large 9 bedroom house in a nondescript neighborhood. I finally found a use for one of the "red cuttings" I got from the neighbors yard.  I put it behind the birdhouses to add some color and a hint of camouflage!

I wanted a pasture buddy for my gelding and I saw her advertised as a brood mare with problems so out of curiosity went to see her.   Apparently she had fallen in a riding accident (the fault of the rider who was thankfully not injured) and she was no longer able to be ridden but could be used as a brood mare.

Last year I had an idea to make my life a  bit  simpler.  I purchased 9 half barrels and planted some of my  vegetables  in those.  Much easier on the weeding as well as bending  over.

FUN VISITOne of my longtime friends from Washington (of 36 years) came for a visit and we had much fun catching up on what's been happening in our lives and we also celebrated my birthday! KIWI FRUIT

Many people have asked me how I can leave Curly Willows for the winter.  Well, it really isn't very easy for the first month or so...it's definitely a culture shock from Washington to Arizona. Strawberry Shortcake is a 13.1 hand 12 year old POA mare with two blue eyes.

We are not slumlords.  We do regular maintenance to keep our units looking nice.  When things break from normal wear or get broken accidentally we fix the problem ASAP. Most of our tenants are families who have rented from us for some time.

I  first saw it in British Columbia last year while visiting one of the  beautiful gardens they have (Butchard Gardens is one of them). So, off  course, I had to give it a try. Yesterday evening while doing my "nightly rounds" I noticed the fog creeping up in the pasture and quickly got my camera.  After the first shot I tried to adjust  my camera (fairly new and I don't know all the settings yet) to a"dusk" setting and came up with the next two shots.  I'm not sure what I did but I thought they looked really cool!

MEET ANNIE





She's an 18 year old  14.2 hand paint with "medicine hat"  coloring which according to Native American legends is a very special horse.  Annie is just a sweet little mare that I found on the DreamHorse site.  She was in a boarding facility and her owner had relocated to California and was looking for a good home for her as well as a sales price. We've had a sad week around here.  My granddaughter's Appy mare, Summer was about 34 or 35 years old and for the past 4  months had been less and less interested in eating and doing much of anything. Our 3 amorous roosters have been pecking the heck out of the hens so I decided to take them out of the coop to  roam the parameter of the fenced area, therefore giving the hens a rest.

I should have waited for them to roost but leave it up to me.......I just decided to catch them and remove them from the coop. It's been extremely hot here for Western Washington......102 degrees last Wednesday.  Everything I touched outside was hot and especially the stone and iron work around the house. I spotted a tiny frog sitting on top of the gate hinge and he did not look happy.  I immediately found him a better spot.


Aaaahhhh, the water barrel.........much better!

THE KOI
About five years ago we purchased eight  koi which were about 24 inches long for our 30 x 50 foot  (4 feet deep) pond.  We were thrilled since the owners were moving and sold them to us for a very reasonable price.  A few weeks later we were down to three and the blue herons were five fish fatter!



The smaller fish are about 12 inches long...compare them to the big guys!

GREENHOUSE REVAMPED
For a number of years my greenhouse was used exactly as that...overwintering plants, starting seeds, transplanting, repotting, etc.  It was full of plants that weren't hardy to our climate or needed special attention.  When we decided to spend our winter months in Arizona the greenhouse was slowly phased out and stood basically empty.

The gunnera, or dinosaur plant as it's sometimes called, is on it's upward spurt. (It's about 2 1/2 feet tall already.)  Although it dies completely to the ground in the winter, by the end of June it's about 7 feet tall with leaves up to 4 feet across.  It likes  shade and water. We usually cut it down after the frost and use its leaves to winter protect the plant. The doves are nesting!  We already had one early baby which surprised me since it's been so cold but he (or she) survived.   A few years ago we bought a mixture of white doves  and ring-tail doves. As time went on we ended up with only the ring-tails since that's the dominant gene. The doves sound absolutely wonderful when the are cooing...which is most all the time! MY INTEGRATED GARDEN! 
Over the years I've mixed a   variety of herbs in with my flowers.  First of all they are inexpensive,   they grow fast, (making a quick filler while waiting for slower  growing  perennials and shrubs to fill in) they can help with weed  control, and  they help make meals taste great!

Hi,  I'm Carol. My husband and I divide our time between our Washington  State mini-ranch and a suburb home in Arizona. On our mini-ranch we  share the space with chickens, doves, Koi, horses, barn cats, and lots  of wildlife.

In Arizona we share our space with rocks and  cactus.......and some very tame roadrunners!
